V-day Weekend

Friday: Friday began with a field trip. My juvenile justice class went to the Bill Logue Center for Juvenile Justice. It was interesting to see. I was a little worried at first about seeing kids behind bars and all that, I've never really been to a jail and it seemed like it would be some sort of inhumane zoo where we tour the facility while these kids sit there watching us, watching them. We didn't, however, see any of the "clients" as they are referred to, but we did see their living quarters or "pods." I think living in an area this small would literally cause me to lose my mind. The picture really doesn't do it justice. There are no windows. None. Not even on the doors. And while this picture depicts blankets and pillows, most don't actually get those because they use them to harm themselves or they use them to stuff the toilet so their room floods and they get to be out and somewhere else for a few hours. Here's the picture of the room, you can't really tell how small it is until you walk inside and stand in it:

After my field trip ended I came home since my next class wasn't for several hours. Unfortunately, however, I started feeling really sick. Dustin was a sweetheart and rented several movies to watch while I laid around hoping to feel better.

We thought this movie was humorous. It actually wasn't a Bush-basher film like I assumed it would be. It showed the different pressures he felt from different directions while trying to run the country. It made me really like Colin Powell, and I already love Laura Bush, but it made me like her even more.

Fireproof was a decent movie, and more than anything had a worthwhile message (never leave your partner) even if much of the acting in the movie was nothing short of dreadful. I liked the film, but felt a little let down since it had been built up so much. This is usually how I feel after watching movies that are supposed to be fabulous, though.

This was Dustin's pick. I used to be okay with more action flicks, but lately I've gotten to where I only like the obviously fictional ones. This was more of a drama than an action flick, but it did show and/or talk about a lot of violence in the war and in gangs in the US. I might be an ostrich, but I'd prefer to keep my head in the sand with regards to the horrible things people do to other people.

Saturday:  Dustin spent most of the day doing homework and I rested enough that by afternoon I was feeling pretty much back to myself again. We decided no gifts for Valentines but Dustin didn't listen and got me a beautiful leather bound journal. If there are two things I love buying its journals and calendars. Don't ask me why, they just make me happy.

I made Dustin dinner, including his favorite spicy sweet potato fries (baked so they're a little healthier). Afterwards we went out for our date. We had been looking for something cool but low-key to do, and a friend told me that the Waco Hippodrome was showing the old film Casablanca for V-day. The Hippodrome is a really neat historic old theatre in Waco that we've always wanted to go to and tickets were 5 bucks a pop, so we had found our plans! I really enjoyed the movie and thought the theatre was incredibly cool looking.

The movie let out at 10 pm and we weren't quite ready to head home so we decided to check out the Dancing Bear Pub near Baylor campus, another place we've always wanted to try. We really, really liked it. The Waco Tribune described it as a relaxed bar where you find grad students and young professionals, I would say they were about right. There was good music, but it wasn't so loud you couldn't talk, the decor was dark hardwood that created a neat ambiance and they had a good selection of beer and wine. We had fun hanging out and flirting over our drinks and will probably go back again before too long.

This is the only picture I could find online of the pub, the inside was really neat but you can't really tell in this picture:

Sunday: Today is shaping up to be a homework, laundry and grocery shopping filled day. Dustin is working on a paper and I'm reading cases for Texas Land Practice. I'm hoping this week goes by fast because next weekend is my birthday and we're celebrating in Austin! I'm very excited!

Hope everyone had a good V-day and weekend!
